The Unfailed Legend of DBS Class '84 of 20 Years

The DBS Class '84 20th Anniversary Celebration have finally taken place at the end of July and the beginning of August of this year. It's another miracle performed by God to help us to make this historical event come true. We have to thank Him for all His Grace and Love for the past years and the years to come.

The title of our 20th Anniversary Celebration is 'A Dream of 20 Years' and it's a Dream that I and everyone of us have made for 20 years. We have different Dreams in our lives and the DBS Dream is always our most treasurable Dream. It's my Biggest Dream and Ideal in the past twenty years to organize this event and once again gather our fellow brothers together.

The idea of setting up our Class '84 came to my mind twenty years ago when I had to leave our dearest school after Form 5. I was feeling very lonely and everything turned to be meaningless. It's the Grace of God that I could gather a large group of Classmates to have a dinner gathering in the Summer of 1985. We had many gatherings afterwards and I had had a very good time before I went to the US for further studies.

Things turned to be even worse when I was in the US and I have experienced a really harsh time. The memory of the good old days in DBS always struck my mind and I made a commitment to myself that I had to gather our Classmates together to retain our brotherhood and spirit.

I started to take actions when I returned to HK in 1989 and, after years of hard efforts, we have attempted to organize the "Class '84 10th Anniversary Dinner" in 16 July 1994. It turned out to be very successful and it's the first time that Class '84 old boys appeared in DSOBA Newsletters and Events.

We have arranged many gatherings after that, and another disaster struck me when my health condition turned worse in 1997. I had a lot of harsh experiences and I could not carry on serving our Class. But, the Creed and Spirit of Class '84 always remained on my mind and I had the belief that one day we could come again.

Once again, we managed to arrange different small gatherings. The idea of organizing the 20th Anniversary Celebration was raised last year and our classmates requested me to be the Chairman again. I promised immediately and I was thinking that it's the chance given by God to make our greatest Dream come true.

After months of arrangement and very hard efforts, we attempted to arrange the Class '84 20th Anniversary Reunion Dinner on 30 July 2004 at the Police Officers' Club, Causeway Bay. We were very honourable to invite Mr. Jacland Lai (55), Former Headmaster of DBS, Mr. Selwyn Chan (77), Immediate Past President of DSOBA, Ms. Phyllis Lo, Head Teacher of DBS Primary Division and her husband, Mr. Nelson Wang, and Mr. Kenny Yip (81) as our Guests of Honour.

The party turned out to be very successful again and we had a total of 71 people attending(which included the guests). As the Chairman of the event, I presented a whole-hearted Opening Speech which expressed my true feelings for the past 20 years. The Guests presented their speeches afterwards which mainly concerned about DSOBA, DBS and the Primary Division. Then, we had a power-point which showed pictures of our old days in DBS and the recent appearance of DBS. Funny stories of our School days were told and we just kept on laughing. I presented gifts of Chinese Poems about DBS that I wrote to our Guests as soveniers. The event ended with a Group Photo taken at the front door of the Club and many clapping sounds.

The Second Day Event took place on 31 July and we went to a Golf Playing in Guangdong Province.

We had the Third Day Event on 01 August to have a Lunch Gathering at the DBS Borders' Dining Room and Assembly at the DBS School Hall. We had the attendance of 39 people including the family members of our Classmates. We filled up the Dining Room and School Hall with laughters.

Ms. Phyllis Lo kindly invited us to visit the Primary Division on 08 August and we were very impressed by the facilities and layouts of the School. I presented a Chinese Poem that I wrote to Ms. Lo for the Celebration of the Opening of the School. We all thanked her for all the kindness.

The Class '84 20th Anniversary Celebrations have finally come to an end and we have to deeply thank DSOBA, DBS, Mr. Stanley Fong, Mr. Selwyn Chan, Mr. Jacland Lai, Mr. Terance Chang, Mr. S. J. Lowcock, Ms. Phyllis Lo, Mr. Nelson Wang and Mr. Kenny Yip for all their supports and participations to make our Dream come true.

The Class '84 Organizing Committee has made commitments to continue arranging events and supporting DBS, DSOBA and Schoolmates so as to make our 'Class '84 Legend' remaining unfailed.

May God Bless All Of You!

Love in Christ,

Darwin Liu (84)
