"Spirit of DBS" Class Reunion
Amazing and incredible, but true. On the 10th of April 2004, thirty-two DBS '55 classmates, including several schoolmates of '53-'56 reappeared at DBS on Kadoorie Hill in MongKok, alive and well after fifty years, i.e., half a century. Those who participated in the reunion were Chan Ying Keung, Kenneth Chan Wing Ming, Andy Chen, Thomas Chow Wai Tong, John Chung Kwok Tai, Fung Yee Wang, Fung Ying Luen, Gary Hamet, Reginald Hamet, Ho Siu Kao, George Kotwall, Lawrence Kotwall, Jacland Lai, Lam Kin Ming, Lam Kam Fung, Alan Lee Sik Chuen, Frank Lee, Jack Hon Keung Lee, Raymond Lee, David Lo, Lo Kai-Ming, Long Hin Jok, Ng Pik Chung, George Patterson, Stephen Peng, Albert Poon, Edgar Shum Tong Fuk, Robert Soong Kien-Tung, David Wong Kwok Wai, Wong Siu Kit, Wong Tak Ko, and Van Wu.
Moreover, this special occasion was joined by spouses and significant others to total almost fifty people in a banquet to celebrate our happy reunion. Musical tribute for the evening was specially performed by Datin May Lee Leong of Malaysia -- sister of Frank Lee. Thanks to Lam Kin Ming, we were once again, as in 1995, treated to a smooth-sailing delightful cruise on Easter Sunday. All of this was made possible by none other than Lo Kai-Ming -- "The Organizer." DBS Old Boys are a tough lot to recruit in good times or bad. Lo succeeded, as in times before, with friendly persuasion and high diplomacy, to muster this robust number of cheerful participants.
At our reunion, a programme proposal entitled "Spirit of DBS" was drafted for discussion.* It was designed to encourage and nurture DBS students in the excellent tradition and Spirit of DBS, guided by Old Boys who advocate the growth of these future leaders. The programme was drafted "To recognize annually Forms 5 and 6 students who exemplify the Spirit of DBS in school, and in their larger community." In addition to HK$6,000 in cash prize, each award includes 18 days of educational travel abroad, hosted and arranged by the Old Boys of DBS.
Salutes to Frank Lee, who asserted that for the price of one dinner, each of us could contribute HK$300 toward the HK$6,000 cash award. Fifteen people donated a total of HK$4,800 immediately, with more to follow. As of this writing, Fung Yee Wang has presented "Spirit of DBS" to the Annual General Meeting of DSOBA, and our proposal was well received.** The first meeting of the 2004/05 General Committee will deliberate on the possible implementation of this programme.
It is our sincere hope that all Old Boys of DBS, regardless of age, class or vintage, will whole-heartedly support and/or participate in this DBS-focused, Hong Kong based, world-wide, cross-cultural, and internationally enriching experience. Best of all, we have the opportunity of a lifetime, to share and care for future generations of DBS students, experiencing together our common bond, refreshing our values, and renewing ourselves.
* "Spirit of DBS" is inspired by the Biblical context of Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Trustfulness, Gentleness and Self-Control --- the heart of our DBS heritage. Ours was the first post-war generation so nurtured in DBS values and ethics for rebuilding civil society. Answering our School Hymn's clarion call to the legacy of truth where the nations live, we're to walk uncowed by fear or favour of the crowd; with strength to comfort our humanity's distress; above all, strength of character to forgive freely the evil past by loving all humankind.
