During the past year, the following members of the general committee resigned due to work commitments, they are James Hong, Chow Kee Wing and John KC Lee, to replace them Alvin Li, Daniel Wan and Spencer Leung were elected into the committee. I would like to thank all General Committee members for their valuable contribution to the Association.
Thanks to the efforts of Horace Chan and Daniel Wan, Co-chairs of the membership committee we received 64 new members during the 12 months in 2005, 50 of our new members are in the 80's and 90's class years. Our financial condition remains healthy, we were required to make an $89,000 provision in our books for long service pay, our surplus after making this provision is $20,000.
At the end of 2004 a Caring Fund for Needy Teachers was proposed by a member. The purpose of the fund is to provide some relief to DBS teachers in needy situations. At the beginning of 2005 initial donation of $60,000 was received and the association matched an equivalent amount. Almost immediately after news of this fund got out, with the help of Mr. Benton Lau, members of the Class of '57 donated another $100,000 to the fund. In 2005 we started a Mentor Program. 15 members from the legal, architectural, banking and medical field volunteered to be mentors and 12 mentees applied. The response from both mentor and mentees were favorable for continuation of the program.
During the past year we supported DBS in attending their sportsman's dinner and musician's dinner and contributed a total of $19,000 for these 2 functions. We also attended the tree planting day at the primary division, the association along with 7 General Committee members donated a total of $42,000 to name a tree located in the field between the secondary and primary division.
Our Social Chairman and Ball Chairman, Alvin Li, was kept occupied this past year. We continue our busy calendar of events with dinner talks and monthly luncheons. We organized a Reunion Dinner at the school in March 2005 where 102 members and guests attended. Our Poolside Party in September was attended by 27 adults and 17 children. We were not able to organize a Games Day in October due to the resurfacing of the school field. We did continue with our University Day in the same month which was well received by parents and students. We managed to sell most of our stock in November's School Fete and $20,000 worth of cash and coupons were donated to the school. Our annual ball in December received great reviews and netted the association close to $300,000. The Association also paid tribute to our patron the late Sir Oswald Cheung and a $2,000 Sir Oswald Cheung - DSOBA annual scholarship was set up to be awarded to 1 junior form and 1 senior form student who have achieved the best academic improvement in the school year. We also ran a tennis tournament and a golf tournament in the 1st quarter of 2006, with the trophies ready for presentation to the winners tonight.
The school is in the process of compiling an official history of DBS and our member Fung Yee Wang is coordinating this very meaningful and difficult task. He has sent out questionnaires seeking information for the history project, any information you supply will be helpful and appreciated.
And finally, I would like to thank the DBS School Committee and Mr. Terence Chang, Headmaster, for their counsel and encouragement. Also, I would like to thank again the General Committee and all Sub-Committee members as well as our secretary, Amy, for their support and dedication during my last 2 years as President. To all DSOBA members, I thank you for your continued support and comments; they are invaluable to the success of the Association.
