DSOBA bid farewell to Mr Jacland Lai (57) and welcomed Mr Terence Chang (65) to be the new Headmaster of DBS in the summer of year 2000. We carry on the tradition to invite Mr Chang as our Honorary Vice President. We were most delighted to be invited to the school for one of our General Committee meetings earlier in the year.
We were made aware of the improvement needs of DBS and reacted promptly by dedicating the proceeds from the auction programme of the Annual Ball to the renovation of the music practice room. Some HK$220,000 was raised on the night. As disclosed in the accounts, we still need to come up with another HK$280,000 during the coming year to honour our commitment. The project also served to reassure ourselves of the care of old boys to the needs of DBS. While DSOBA has participated in numerous ad-hoc fund raising programmes for DBS in the past, there were serious thoughts about the role of old boys in the long-term financial provision for the continued improvements of the school. Healthy exchange of ideas took place in the General Committee meetings during the year. As President of DSOBA, I feel that this is a marvelous opportunity for old boys to come together for a worthwhile course, thereby building an even stronger bond with DBS and amongst ourselves. We shall keep you informed of any progress.
The continued development of DSOBA relies on the devotion of the General Committee and the various sub-committees. I am most encouraged by the enthusiasm of some old boys, as evidenced by the pro-active approach in seeking support from fellow old boys in the General Committee election process. I certainly hope to see more members, especially those graduated in the 50's, 60's and 90's, joining the work (and the fun!) of the General Committee and sub-committees.
Concluding the year just passed, we had a successful annual ball among other fun packed activities like the poolside party, BBQ night and games day. For those who attended the school fete, you would recall the live music arranged by DSOBA for everybody's enjoyment. Financially, there was a deficit of HK$101,486 for the year. (1999: HK$25,377) The annual ball and the investment income remained the major sources of our revenue. Administration costs were the major cost items.
As always, I treasure the opportunity to serve DSOBA and DBS. I thank Andrew Liang (68) and Eldon Chu (65) who retire from the General Committee after serving the Association for an extended period of time. I have also gained much in working together with fellow General Committee members. Amy, our secretary, is also a great help in supporting the administration work and communication with our members. Thanks to everyone for the support and encouragement to me, DSOBA and DBS.
Wilfred Kam (78)
President 2000-01
