Welcome to the Annual General Meeting of the DSOBA.
The Association continued its role in providing events that promote and
encourage social interaction among members and DBS old boys, and
maintained close ties with DBS during the past year.
The last Annual General Meeting was held on 30 April 1999. During this
year, Patrick Sun and Robert Fong resigned from the General Committee.
The vacancies were filled by Thomas
Ho (83) and Sunny Lee (77). Sunny
has been actively involved in the Newsletter Sub-committee in the past
year while Thomas participated in the Ball Committee in the past. Norris
Yang, one of our past presidents, Ronald Lam who for years served as the
Race Box Convenor and Frank Li who focused on the Sports Club activities
are retiring from the General Committee at this Annual General Meeting.
I would like to thank them for their dedicated service and support to
the Association.
We have 26 new members joining the Association during the year. The
total number of member as at end of 1999 was 1,215. A New Members and
Class Agents Party was held in
August 1999. We continue to have the
monthly luncheon on all first Thursday of the month. Desmond Fung (63)
was invited to speak in one of the monthly luncheons during the year. A
new edition of the Membership Directory is issued for year 2000.
The Social Function Sub-committee, headed by
Peter Yam (78), produced a
number of programmes in the past year. This included the
Pool-side
Party, Games Day and Golf Tournament,
a joint function with the Sports
Club. The participation by members and guests was reasonable.
As in the past, we had the DSOBA stall in the school fete. We managed to
raise some HK$29,896 for the school through sale of mechandise
specifically arranged for the occasion.
A Millennium Ball was held on 31 December 1999
at the Conrad Hotel to
celebrate the turn of the century. The function was well attended with
45 tables. We dedicated our care and love to the next generation by
featuring the younger generation of our old boys in a fashion parade.
The performance by Eliza Chan was well received as well. The surplus
from the event was HK$ 79,852. We appreciate the efforts put in by the
Ball Chairman, Desmond Yip (82)
and his committee members.
We remain the only secondary school in Hong Kong to maintain a race box
at both the Shatin and Happy Valley race courses. Chow Kee Wing (63)
took up the position of Race Box Convenor in April 2000 while
Eldon Chu
(64) continued to serve as Deputy Convenor. Ronald Lam (54) had been
most supportive in managing the race boxes over the past years and we
must thank him here again for his hard work.
Our Sports Club had membership of over 80 number this year. There were
two major tournaments, tennis and squash,
held in the year. The tennis
and swimming facilities in DBS are much liked by our members.
Upgrading of our web-site is an on-going exercise. We are putting more
information on the web-site for easy access by members. Please check the
web-site for the latest development. In parallel, we published two
issues of the DSOBA Newsletter during the year, a traditional mean of
communicating with our members.
During the year, we participated in the preparation of the DBS
Homecoming
Concert back in July 1999. Over 100 old boys and family
attended the concert. We all felt proud of the musical achievements of
the students and the leadership of Ronnie Cheng (83), Head of the Music
Department. We continued to organise the English Summer Course for new
students jointly with DBS. 150 new DBS Form One boys spent a week's time
during the last summer to prepare themselves for the new environment.
Mr Jacland Lai, our Vice President and Headmaster of DBS, will retire in
the summer of 2000. Mr Lai has served DBS for well over 30 years. I
would like to thank Mr Lai for his support and encouragement to the
Association through the years and we truly hope that Mr Lai will
continue to participate in the Association's activities after he
retires.
I would like to thank the DBS School Committee for their continued
support. I would also like to recognise the efforts of all members of
the General Committee,
Sub-committees and our Secretary, Amy during the
past year. Lastly, I thank all members of the Association for their
participation and continued support.
