Among the prestigious extracurricular achievements of Diocesan Boys'
School during the past years were the 1st Place in Symphony Orchestras
and String Orchestras, Best Boys' Choir, Best Junior Choir, Best Mixed
Choir, Best Choir of the Year, Most outstanding School won in 2001.
These achievements were all the more remarkable in light of the lack of
facilities available to the teacher/student participants. The old music
room was outdated and small, lacking in most modern conveniences for
storage and practice purposes.
The Diocesan School Old Boys' Association (DSOBA) recognized the need
for improvements to be made for the future, and decided that
fund-raising efforts should be made to make the monies available for the
necessary changes.
The Project was earmarked at HK$500,000.00 and part of this amount had
already been raised during DSOBA Ball 2000. Further fund-raising
efforts are necessary to make up for the remainder.
The concept for this Project was reviewed with the appointed Architect
and certain features were identified as core to the total look and
facilities to be incorporated in the Project.
It was decided that the Room should have a harmonious balance
incorporating a classic appearance with the desired acoustical and
high-tech features.
The first requirement has been achieved with the use of wood finishes
for the flooring, window louvres, and veneer for the cabinets. These
classic features are enhanced and a warm atmosphere is maintained
throughout the Room with the use of ivory coloured walls and recessed
downlighting.
Acoustical aspects were addressed with the installation of an acoustical
tile false ceiling, solid core doors, double-glazed glass panel for the
Recording Studio and the use of sound insulation on the window louvres.
The high tech features (to be added) will facilitate the use of
computers and audio-visual presentations in future lessons.
The new Music Practice Room now has a practice area that can comfortably
accommodate 80 persons and a grand piano.
Other features of the Room include:
- the installation of 7 split air conditioners for a comfortable environment
- a separate storage area for house instruments which also serves as a CD library
- the Music Master's Office cum Recording Studio
The conversion of the Day Boys' Dining Hall into the new Music Practice
Room left a new problem. Another location for the dining hall had to be
identified and the necessary changes made. It was decided to convert
the old Laundry Room for this purpose, and refurbish it at minimal
expense, yet provide the users with an improved environment.
This secondary project was completed months ago and the new Day Boys'
Dining Hall now attractively incorporates contemporary stainless steel
pendant light fittings with the classic look of the red brick walls and
pitched roof which have been retained in the room.
The architectural portion of the Project is now completed, but
additional funds will be needed for the computers, audio visual
equipment, a grand piano and more lighting, etc. Hopefully, the
additional monies can be raised in the
Home Coming Concert 2001 to bring
the Project to a happy conclusion.
