CARNIVAL D'SOBA
7 December, 2002

As time drew near to the 2002 Annual Ball, there were quite a lot of last minute surprises.

The original Latino band which we booked from Manila cancelled at the last minute because of illness and due to the adverse economic climate in Hong Kong, the remaining tables had to be sold at gun point. The contractor who agreed to do the printing of the programme, the back drop and the setting was incommunicado and seemed to have vaporized which led to a temporary crisis.

However, having great faith in the resourcefulness of DBS old boys, the Calvary came to the rescue in the form of Edward Hui (81) who at very short notice arranged for the printing of the programme, the back drop and the setting with the beautiful plants. Despite the short notice, Edward did a fantastic job in creating the ambiance for which we were most delighted.

Moreover, the replacement band was beyond our expectation and performed beautifully with powerful, authentic Latino beat to which many of our old boys danced up a storm. The dancers wore spectacular costumes and their rhythmic moves created a carnival like atmosphere.

The skid was the highlight of the evening and this year was exceptionally good. The script was well written and humorous and the cast acted out their roles with professionalism, with a special mention of Patrick Dunn (80) and Desmond Yip (82) who imitated to the tee, Mr. 'Superman' K.S. Li, the talented Mahmood Rumjahn (74) who not only acted in the skit but also wrote a song Never Settle for Less which aptly describes the spirit of DBS. It all goes to show how versatile DBS boys are.

For the sale of the raffle tickets, it was the first time that we applied to the government to sell the tickets ahead of the ball and we managed to raise nearly $200,000. which was quite remarkable in view of the tough economic climate. I must convey my personal thanks to all those die-hard old boys and friends who dug deep into their pockets in order for us to achieve this successful outcome.

A heartfelt thanks to all those who donated the wonderful prizes and special thanks to Breitling who sponsored two very beautiful time pieces which was won by Kent Yeh (71). The 2nd prize however was parallel to the 1st which was a 3 night stay at the presidential suite of the Regent Resort in Chiangmai, Thailand which was kindly donated by Ramon Lo (64).

A special thanks must also go out to Alvin Li (86) who very generously donated 500 pieces of beautifully designed, high quality Arctica vests as giveaways to all guests.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Chairman of the General Committee, Selwyn Chan (77) for his leadership and guidance, members of the General committee and the Ball Committee for all their hard work and time in putting this event together. I would also like to express a special thank you to Dr. Lai Cham Fai (71) who could not make it to the ball but nevertheless bought a table without hesitation and also purchased a decent sum of raffle tickets. Dr. Lai, we need more like you!

To all those who thanked me at the end of the evening and congratulated me on the success of the ball, at the end of the day, the attendees and supporters of DBS were the ones who should be congratulated and thanked for they were the ones who made the Ball a great success.
