University Day
Sat, 18 October, 2003
Jointly organized by
DSOBA & DBS Careers Office

"University Day" - a very rewarding & unique experience for students & their parents, and old boys & their children

Over 140 people gathered in the DBS school hall in the early afternoon of 18 October, 2003 (Saturday), and they were there to learn more about overseas university education so that they could make well-informed decisions; effective ways to enhance their chances of application for admission; valuable advice about maximizing the value of studying overseas; and many others. They were the students of DBS accompanied by their parents, and also DBS old boys together with their children.

They were attracted to this "University Day" organized by DBS and DSOBA, because they expected to hear frank and very useful advice that might not be available elsewhere. And they were satisfied. The difference came from the speakers and panelists, who were, with two exceptions, DBS old boys. All of them have studied in the universities that they represented or in the countries that they talked about in this event. They were open to share their personal experience, insight, and tips with the participants. Some of them were being intimately involved in the admission to their respective universities by interviewing applicants from this region.

Furthermore, five countries, i.e. USA, UK, Canada, Australia & Mainland China, were covered in this single event. In addition to talks on general topics, there were small group discussions by countries and with representatives from four prestigious universities.

"I'm glad that I made the right choice to come here because the advice was so relevant and useful" said a parent with a smile on her face while she was walking out of the school building with a group of fellow parents. She was not alone in having to make such a tough decision because there coincidentally happened to be two other open-to-public events on university education in town. Fortunately and expectedly, our "University Day" was very different, and the participants found it warm and very useful.

This was the first time that a university event of such a large scale was organized specifically for DBS students and children of DBS old boys. It would not be possible without the strong support of the Headmaster, Mr. Terence Chang; the Dean of Students, Mr. Mark Rosario; the Careers Mistress, Ms. Jenny Tso; and various students. It took DSOBA more than four months to plan, organize, and roll out this "University Day" event. It is worth special mentioning that the old boy panelists were very keen to help and they responded enthusiastically when invited by DSOBA.

As what Mr. Selwyn Chan, the President of DSOBA, has succinctly described, this "University Day" was not only a successful event but also a showcase of our DBS brotherhood and spirit.
