James Tien Pei-chun (63) is likely to become
the next Chairman of the Liberal Party
James Tien Pei-chun
(63) is likely to succeed Allen Lee Peng-fei as
the next Chairman of the Liberal Party, after the latter submitted his
resignation on November 3, 1998. Mr. Lee said that James, who is 52, was
his favoured successor. James was praised for his leadership qualities and
is expected to take the Liberal Party into the next century. He is also
acceptable to other legislators and the public. Ronald Arculli was the
other contender for the chairmanship of the Liberal Party.
It was rumoured that Allen Lee will take over the post of Executive Council
Convenor when Dr. Chung Sze-yuen, who is already 81, steps down.
James Tien has been a member of the Legislative Council since 1983. He is
currently the Chairman of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce.
