The Government announced today that the Central People's Government has, on the nomination and recommendation of the Chief Executive, Mr Tung Chee Hwa, approved the appointment of Mr Timothy Tong Hin-ming, Deputy Secretary for Security as Commissioner of Customs and Excise. Mr Tong will take up the post with effect from September 29, 2003, succeeding Mr Raymond Wong Hung-chiu who took up the post of Commissioner, Independent Commission Against Corruption on August 25, 2003.


Brief biographical notes on Timothy Tong Hin-Ming J.P.:

Aged 54. Mr Tong joined the Hong Kong Government in November 1972, serving initially in the Executive Officer Grade and later in the Trade Officer Grade. He joined the Administrative Service in April 1992 and rose to his present rank of Administrative Officer Staff Grade B1 in July 2002.

Mr Tong has served in various bureaux and departments including the former Trade Department, the former Security Branch, the former Urban Services Department, the former Education and Manpower Branch, the former City and New Territories Administration, the Home Affairs Department and the Geneva Office of the then Trade and Industry Branch. He became Deputy Secretary for Security in January 1999, and has been doubling-up the post of Permanent Secretary for Security since July 1, 2002.
